A major search was launched of Portland Harbour yesterday afternoon. (6 July)

It's after a kite surfer reported he'd seen an adult and a child on a kayak in difficulties off Smallmouth Beach.

Spokesperson for Weymouth Lifeboat Station, Ken Francis told Greatest Hits Radio Dorset:

"Carrying out a search close to Smallmouth and working outwards it became apparent that there was a need for more eyes on the scene and a request for the All-weather lifeboat to join in the search was made to Solent Coastguard.

"The All-weather lifeboat was launched at 5.35pm and joined in the search.

"Coastguard teams were walking the shore and using binoculars to search for the missing pair.

"Following an intensive search of virtually the whole of Portland Harbour by both lifeboats, with nothing found both boats were stood down returned to station."
