Firefighters are tackling a major fire in Chickerell.

The blaze at Crookhill Depot and Waste Transfer site on Chickerell Road started just after 2pm this afternoon. (15 November)

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service received more than 50 calls to 999, reporting black smoke and a number of explosions.

A spokesman for DWFRS said:

"We are dealing with multiple vehicles well alight, and firefighters are working hard to stop the fire spreading to an adjacent building.

"We expect 15 fire appliances to be on scene soon, so some 75 firefighters, but this is a fast-paced incident and some are still en-route from across the county.

"Also on scene are water carriers, two aerial ladder platforms and a high volume pump is on its way from Christchurch to help with water supply.

There are no reports of any injuries and we are recommending that people locally keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.
