Its a Bank Holiday weekend and Litter Free Dorset have renewed their call this year for businesses to stop selling disposable barbecues.

They are also encouraging everyone to choose alternative options, such as reusable BBQs and picnics this summer season.

Supermarkets Waitrose and Aldi are already leading the way by removing disposable BBQs and Litter Free Dorset would like to see more shops following in their footsteps.

Spokesperson Sophie Colley told Greatest Hits Radio Dorset:

"We are lucky enough to have some gorgeous heathland in Dorset and some beautiful forests. But the thing is with disposable BBQ's if they're left behind and not used responsibly they can cause wildfire.

"They are also a nightmare to get rid of. It takes quite a few hours for a disposable BBQ to cool down. If you are in your own garden that's a lot easier, but if your at a beach, you have to hang around and wait for the BBQ to cool down. Then you need to find a metal bin to put it in, or take it home in your car, which isn't easy."

Why are Litter Free Dorset calling for an end to disposable BBQs?

• Disposable BBQs are often inappropriately disposed of, sometimes resulting in wildfire, with devastating environmental, social and economic impact.

• Disposable BBQs are unsustainable – single use and non-recyclable, so destined for landfill or incineration, while containing charcoal, often from unsustainable sources, contributing to deforestation.

• Disposable BBQs pose a considerable safety risk to beach visitors, often being littered, left under the sand, causing injury.
