Tributes have been paid to a British man who was killed after being hit by the President of Kenya's motorcade.

Edgar Riches was 79 when he died on Thursday (March 13th) as Kenya's President WIlliam Ruto's convoy was passing through the capital, Nairobi.

While the motorcade was working its way through the city, Riches was hit by one of the cars that formed the line of vehicles.

Following the incident thing, the driver of the car was arrested and then released on bail, according to Kenyan Police.

Riches, who was from Poole in Dorset, was in Kenya to carry out humanitarian charity work in the country, as well as seeing his sister and his nephew in the area.

He also had raised funds to help open a building - be it an orphanage or a school - in the African nation.

Speaking to the Press Association, retired councillor and close friend Ann Stribley said Riches was a "very private individual who never wanted any public acknowledgment of anything; he just did what he thought was right, for no personal reward or acclaim whatsoever".

He added: "I heard he was knocked over by a motorcade going by, I can't imagine how - he certainly wasn't the sort of chap who would walk out into the street or jaywalk."

In a statement released on their X account, Simon Giarchi from Cafod Plymouth and South West paid tribute to Riches saying: "We were incredibly sad to hear of the death of Edgar Riches, an inspirational gentleman who fundraised relentlessly for Cafod over decades.

"He was tireless in organising hundreds of charity events year after year (including one just days before his trip to Nairobi).

"Edgar was a kind and remarkable person who will be sorely missed. His efforts, via his Poole parish, to help tackle injustice and inequality around the world, will continue to make a difference to many communities living in poverty".
