On 9 March 2023, a daring theft attempt unfolded at Christchurch Jewellers in Saxon Square. Matthew Benjamin Wood, 42, from West Yorkshire, tried to steal two high-value watches but was stopped by quick-thinking staff.

Wood initially visited the shop around 11:15am, asking to view two watches worth £995 and £12,995. After being shown the watches in a private room, he left, saying he needed to speak with his girlfriend before buying.

He returned just over an hour later, at about 12:30pm, and again requested to see the watches. Seizing the opportunity, Wood grabbed both timepieces and tried to leave the store.

A staff member bravely intervened by shutting the door to stop him. After struggling for around 20 seconds, Wood pushed the staff member against the door and fled with the watches.

Police were called, and forensic investigators found Wood’s fingerprints on the glass display. He was later arrested in West Yorkshire and charged with robbery.

At Bournemouth Crown Court on 16 July 2025, Wood pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison.

Detective Sergeant Kate Bleese of Dorset Police praised the staff’s courage, saying, “Thankfully, no one was physically injured, but it was a terrifying experience. The judge recognised the victim’s bravery in trying to prevent the theft. Our investigation ensured Wood was brought to justice.”
