Weymouth's Iron Man triathlon will return for another three years, at least.

Town Councillors unanimously agreed upon a contract to bring the race back for September 2021-2023.

It's often criticised for widespread road closures across Dorset to make room for cyclists.

But, councillors believe the benefit far outweighs the cost. Cllr David Gray told Greatest Hits Radio:

"Post COVID, bringing the town back to life with visitors; this is a great opportunity to showcase the town, and therefore a vibrant town brings jobs.

"There is some minor inconvenience, let's not get away from it, with the traffic, the road closures, and maybe restrictions on the seafront.

"But that's outweighed by the economic benefit of showcasing our fantastic town."

It's estimated the race generates £5 million for the local economy as almost 3,000 competitors head to the town, and bring their supporters with them.

It's the third largest Ironman event in Europe, with athletes from around the world taking on the challenge of a 1.2-mile sea swim in Weymouth Bay, a 56-mile bike ride around Dorset and then a 13.1-mile half marathon along Weymouth Seafront, with a grandstand finish in front of Weymouth Pavilion.
