Coastguard teams from Wyke and Portland, along with the South Western Ambulance Trust, were called to Sharpitts Quarry, Westcliff Portland, at 12:13pm yesterday (Saturday 13th December.)

A male climber had fallen approximately 10 ft and was suffering a suspected broken ankle.

Paramedics treated the climber on scene and secured his ankle. He was then placed onto a stretcher and airlifted from the quarry where he was flown to Dorchester County Hospital.

A spokesperson from Portland Bill Coastguard Rescue Team said:

"Due to location it was decided that the best route of extraction, would be to place the casualty into a stretcher and winch from his position using the Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 175 from Lee on Solent.

"The climber was then flown to Dorchester and met by Wyke CRT who had prepared HLS.

"The casualty was then transferred the short distance to DCH by land ambulance for a full assessment.

"All teams then stood down and returned to their stations.

"We wish the climber a fast recovery."
