The A35 has been shut this afternoon (Monday 18th July) near Dorchester, due to an HGV lorry catching alight.

Dorset Police tell us they're helping with the road closure between Winterbourne Abbas and the Monkeys Jump roundabout.

They were called at 2.34pm after reports of the fire came in.

National Highways are also warning drivers to stay away:

Diversion route in place

An official diversion route has been put in place by National Highways - if you're travelling westbound:

  • At the roundabout, take the first exit onto the A3066
  • Continue for approx. 10 miles through Melplash, Beaminster and Moserton to Misterton
  • At the A356/A3066 junction, turn right onto the A356
  • Continue for approx. 15 miles through Toller Down Gate, Rampisham Down to Frampton
  • At the A3066/A37 junction, turn right onto the A37
  • Continue for approx. 5 miles to rejoin the A35 at Poundbury

Eastbound traffic should follow the reverse route, although local knowledge may mean some shortcuts are possible too.
