The Green Party has gained its first councillor in Poole after a defection from the Liberal Democrats, marking a shift in the political landscape at BCP Council.

Councillor Rachel Pattinson-West, who represents the Alderney and Bourne Valley ward, has confirmed she has joined the Greens, saying the move was driven by values rather than any local political dispute.

Cllr Pattinson-West has been a prominent figure locally, championing efforts to protect heathland from summer fire risks and off-road vehicle damage.

She has also backed funding bids to address flooding at the local community centre and Branksome Recreation Ground, and has campaigned for safer, more accessible routes for children travelling to school.

In a statement, she said her decision came down to what she described as “hope” for a better future.

“Like many people, I am deeply concerned by the way the most vulnerable are being scapegoated for inequalities created by right-wing politics,” she said. “I want to be part of building a fairer society rooted in dignity, respect and humanity.”

She added that under the leadership of Zack Polanski, the Green Party offered “something I have not felt in UK politics for a long time”.

“I also want to be absolutely clear that this decision is not due to any local issues,” she said. “This move is about following my values and my belief that the Green Party is where the clearest path to a brighter future now lies.”

Green Group Leader at BCP Council, Cllr Chris Rigby, welcomed the defection, calling it a sign that traditional politics is no longer working for many people.

He said: “Business-as-usual politics is failing our communities and more people are turning to the Greens for a hopeful, values-driven alternative that puts people, planet and the public good first.”

BCP Council has confirmed that the political balance of its committees will be reviewed at the next ordinary meeting of the council.
