Weymouth Harbour Euro 2020 screenings CANCELLED by organisers
It's due to a lack of social distancing at the event
Last updated 15th Jun 2021
All future Euro 2020 screenings on Weymouth Harbour have been cancelled.
Greatest Hits Radio Dorset have been given the news in a statement from Dorset Council.
The local authority say the decision was taken by the organisers, who recognise that "compliance with Covid guidelines cannot be guaranteed."
Up to 250 people were allowed into an area outside the Rendezvous on Sunday afternoon to watch England play Croatia.
The limit on numbers was to allow for social distancing, but pictures later emerged on social media showing people standing closely together.
A Dorset Council spokesperson told Greatest Hits Radio Dorset:
"It is disappointing that the football screening event on Custom House Quay yesterday did not run in accordance with the assurances made to us by the event organiser.
"There was a lack of social distancing at the event, despite safety and security measures put in place by the organisers to make sure COVID guidelines were followed. This obviously raises concerns for Dorset Council.
"The organiser recognises that the event didn't proceed as intended and because compliance with COVID secure requirements cannot be guaranteed, they have taken the decision to cancel future planned Euros events."
Greatest Hits Radio Dorset have contacted the organisers of the event.
They have given us this statement:
"The safety of our teams and customers is paramount therefore in light of the actions of a small minority during the outside screening of England v Croatia, we have decided to cancel all future outside events until the government has lifted all social distancing restrictions.
"Future games still can be enjoyed inside our venue, safely seated, with table-side hospitality. Bookings can be made through our Facebook page bookings system."
