Work to demolish former quayside Weymouth harbour buildings will be going ahead – including the former departures lounge to the rear of the Pavilion.

The response came in reply to a question at the harbours committee which was critical of the lack of updates from Dorset Council.

Questioner Susan Boyd said the internet information pages about the Peninsula project had not been updated since November.

A pre-prepared council response said the project team had been working with an architect and stakeholders to “develop a new and improved harbourside along the edge of the Peninsula.”

It said this would include a new fish landing quay, a fishing compound area, possibly with additional facilities and harbour offices including toilets and shower.

The Council Statement said:

“Old buildings will be demolished and the current secure area reconfigured alongside Commercial Berth 1.

"This will reduce the cost of maintenance for these redundant buildings and provide a less cluttered site.

"Our plans have been delayed and amended due to Covid and other pressures, but we are now able to move forward with this scheme.

"The aim of these works is to help safeguard jobs and provide the opportunity for growth for businesses around the harbour.

"The improved public realm is intended to help encourage people to interact with our harbour and increase visitor numbers."

Around £250,000 has been put aside in the harbour budget for building demolition and site clearance work.
