The cute little ones are the first of many expected to hatch
A baby boom's begun at Dorset's Abbotsbury Swannery, with the first cygnets of the season arriving there.
The hatching season for swans is May and June, so we can expect to see scores of little ones making an appearance in the coming weeks.
Coincidentally, the first cygnets arriving in 2022 came from Nest Number 1 at the Swannery, and we've been getting to see them take their first swims alongside their mum.
Abbotsbury is the only place in the world where visitors are permitted to walk alongside the nests of more than 100 pairs of mute swans.
We could even see the cygnets hatching right in front of our eyes, if we're lucky enough.
Swannery Manager Charlie Wheeler says:
“It is always such a thrill when the first eggs hatch and now it’s all systems go for the next couple of months, as hundreds of cygnets make their debut.
“Our visitors get a wonderful close-up view of the young birds and can see how attentive the swan parents are, as their youngsters grow and venture out of the nest.
“Visitors can also take part in the mass feeding sessions twice a day, which is quite a spectacle when the swans gather en masse for their lunch and tea!”
The baby swans are expected to spend the summer learning the ropes with their parents, before taking their first flights in the autumn.
The Swannery is open to visitors every day from 10.00am to 5.00pm.
