Firefighters tackle major barn fire in Thornecombe

Crews from 9 fire stations in Dorset and Somerset were called out to tackle the blaze

Firefighters from Dorset and Somerset were called to tackle a major barn fire in Thornecombe yesterday.

Around 60 bales of straw were alight.

A spokesperson for Bridport Fire Station said:

"Appliances from Axminster Fire Station, Chard Fire Station, Charmouth Fire Station, Lyme Regis Fire Station, Yeovil Fire Station, Crewkerne Fire Station, Colyton Fire Station and a support officer were all in attendance.

"The fire caused 100% fire and smoke damage to the contents of the barn but fortunately the barn building itself suffered damaged to just 4 plastic skylights, in total Crews used 4 Breathing Apparatus wearers, Gas Detection Equipment, 3 Hose Reel Jets, 1 Ground Monitor, 3 45mm Attack Jets, a Light Portable Pump, Positive Pressure Ventilation Fan and the farmer with his telehandler.

"The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental."
