Firefighters have been dealing with a blaze in Swanage town centre this afternoon (Thursday 6th March) - with people asked to avoid the area.

Crews were called to a commercial property in The Square at around 3.30pm.

The lower end of the High Street is closed while emergency services are on the scene.

The fire's in a ground floor takeaway kitchen.

In a statement, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue have said:

"We were called at 3.24pm today (6 March) to The Square, Swanage to reports of a commercial property fire.

"Four crews are currently in attendance from Swanage, Wareham, Poole and Westbourne, and four breathing apparatus wearers have been using two hose reel jets and one safety line to extinguish."

The blaze is now believed to be out, but crews remain on site to dampen down any hotspots.
