Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Services have confirmed that a large fire on Bournemouth's East Cliff is now under control. The blaze, reported to the West of the East Cliff Zigzag is believed to be out.

Crews remained at the scene yesterday evening (3 May) to damp down any remaining hotspots, with a reinspection scheduled for 6am this morning.

A spokesperson from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue has said:

"The fire is now believed to be out and no further resources are required. Firefighters will remain on the scene for approximately 45 minutes dampening down hotspots."

Emergency services responded promptly to the fire, which caused concern among local residents and visitors.

The cause of the blaze is currently unknown.

BCP Council has issued a reminder about wildlife safety, urging people to take extra care around heathland and clifftop areas. They have offered this advice:

  • Never light fires or use BBQs near heathland or cliffs
  • Dispose of cigarettes responsibly and never throw them from car windows
  • Report any fire or signs of smoke to the fire service immediately
  • Call 999 if you see any deliberate fire setting.
