The ‘symbol of hope’ was damaged in a fire at Prince of Wales First School
Last updated 10th Mar 2021
A handmade rainbow created by children at the Prince of Wales First School in Dorchester was set fire to by vandals, just 12 hours before schools were set to reopen.
It was made by the children of key workers who were attending the school during the second lockdown.
Firefighters were called to the school at 8:20pm on Sunday night. (7 March)
Headteacher Gary Spracklen said:
“It was a real symbol of hope, but we’re not going to be extinguished by abit of fire. We’ll come back stronger, rest assured.
“Unfortunately we’ve had to take the remainder of the rainbow down.
“Huge thanks to the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service who were here within minutes. It was put out very quickly.”
Young people seen in the area
Following enquiries, it was reported that a group of young people were seen earlier in the evening approaching the school while carrying a lighter.
Neighbourhood Inspector Darren Stanton, of Dorchester Police, said:
“This banner was being displayed as a thank you to the NHS during the pandemic and it is very upsetting that it has now been damaged.
“I am appealing to anyone who was in the area and witnessed what happened to please get in touch.
“I would be really keen to hear from any local residents or motorists who may have captured relevant footage on either home CCTV systems or dashcams.
“Finally, if you know who was responsible for this incident or have any information that may assist us, please get in touch.”
