Essential maintenance being carried out on Weymouth Beach
The section alongside Greenhill Gardens will be closed to the public
Essential maintenance to part of Weymouth Beach means it'll be closed to the public this week.
Work's taking place along the section past Greenhill Gardens - from the Seascape Café towards the Beach Café at the end of Brunswick Terrace.
Dorset Council say the work will begin today (Monday 4th March) and take a week to complete.
It isn't safe for the beach to remain open during the work, due to the heavy machinery being used on the sands.
Pedestrian access on the promenade may also be disrupted at times.
Some Portland stone is being brought in to protect the toe of the wall.
The delivery of rock will be done via the promenade from Brunswick Terrace, with highways officers providing some traffic management to ensure that members of the public using the promenade are kept safe.
Cllr Ray Bryan, Dorset Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, Travel and Environment, said:
“We know that many local people and visitors value and use the promenade regularly for lots of different reasons, which is why it’s important we carry out regular maintenance to ensure it stays in good condition.
“Despite the continuing inclement weather, this area continues to see high footfall and we’re grateful for people’s patience and understanding while we carry out this essential work.”
Without this maintenance work, the foundations of the seawall could be undermined by the action of the waves which in turn would cause significant damage to the promenade over time.
