An elderly man has been rescued after his mobility scooter ended up in the River Stour in Gillingham.

Fire crews were called to Wavering Lane East at 10.06am yesterday morning.

Two crews attended, from Gillingham and Wincanton and water rescue teams were also mobilised from Trowbridge and Chippenham, as it was unclear from the 999 call how deep the water was.

They were later turned back as the water was shallow enough for firefighters on scene to wade in and help the man to safety.

A spokesman for Wincanton Fire Station said:

"Go careful near open water, especially this time of year when river banks are slippery!"
