A troop of eco-campaigners have been welcomed to Dorchester with a loud cry.

Town Crier Alastair Chisholm welcomed the Bloomin' Greenwash Travelling Circus at Maumbury Rings yesterday.

The group are not in fact a traditional circus of clowns and acrobats, but rather a travelling troop cycling more than 300 miles from Brighton to St Ives ahead of the G7 summit next week.

They want to make sure world leaders make good on promises to deal with the climate and ecological emergency.

Extinction Rebellion campaigners at Maumbury Rings offered the cyclists a chance to recharge their batteries and refill their bellies.

One of the cyclists, Hamish MacKenzie said:

"We don't trust our politicians to do what they say they're going to do.

"We have Boris Johnson calling for the G7 to meet and as far as we can see the G7 is mainly about economic recovery rather than the real issue which is trying to stop climate change.

"We think economic recovery, the way it's planned, is getting back to business as usual, and that's not good enough. We need actions rather than vague promises of something that's going to happen some time in the future."

They'll arrive in St Ives on the 11th June, making lots more stops like this one along the way.

Alastair Chisholm, Dorchester Town Crier, said:

"Whatever the G7 do, it's very easy for them to say the right things, and lots of people are saying the right things, what matters are the actions that follow. So promises are splendid rhetoric but let's get on and do something because we are getting very, very close to the edge.

"Old people like me who haven't got very long left, it's not going to make a lot of difference to me, but my kids and my grandkids, are we really going to go on messing things up for their future?

"No we owe it to them to act responsibly."
