A drive-thru Greggs is likely to be added to the new Shell petrol station off Coode Way, Portland.

Dorset Council has approved the proposal as an addition to the original planning consent.

The move has the backing of Portland town council.

No objections were received to the changes although there has been a suggestion that extra litter bins now be provided on the site.

The addition of the drive through will make little difference to the original plan, apart from a small kiosk being added to one side of the building.

Said a planning agent:

“The rationale behind the drive-through retail proposal is to respond to increased customer demand for Covid-safe shopping methods. For example, ‘click and collect’ shopping has seen a marked increase in popularity in the last year, with drive-throughs proving very popular…The proposed development would therefore significantly boost Portland’s self-containment, not to mention the peninsula’s economy through enhanced choice and competition in the market.”

Jobs boost

The new petrol station and associated shop area, together with car wash and electric vehicle charging points and will create up to 35 full and part-time jobs, opening around the clock.

The site is bounded by Portland Beach Road, Coode Way and Mereside, just off the existing mid-way roundabout on the beach road.

The site allows for around 20 parking spaces and some outside tables for customers to use for eating or drinking.
