Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding us about the importance of a working smoke alarm following a serious house fire in Wiltshire.

Smoke alarms were fitted in the home but unfortunately, they didn't activate.

Incidents like this, remind us of the importance of having a working and well-maintained smoke alarm that is regularly tested, in the home.

They provide an early warning to a fire and give you enough time to put an escape plan to action.

CHECK YOUR SMOKE ALARM

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is asking people to make sure that their alarms are up to date and up to the job. To keep your alarms in working order:

  • Make sure there is at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home.
  • Test your smoke alarms by pushing the button every month.
  • Check that your smoke alarms are less than 10 years old.
  • Change the batteries every year. Never remove them.
  • Fit smoke alarms in the right place - on landings and hallways and near bedrooms. Also consider fitting them in rooms which have electrical appliances - e.g. a heater or charger - or other fire risks.
  • Take a moment to check on your loved ones who may need help to ensure they're fully protected.

IT WAS A LUCKY ESCAPE

Station Manager, David Geddes, fire investigation officer for this incident said:

"The family inside the property had a really lucky escape.

"The investigation into the cause of this fire is still underway, but we believe smoking materials were being used in the property at the time of the fire.

"I would like to take this opportunity to remind residents that smoking can be extremely dangerous. The best way of protecting yourself and others in your home from this risk is to give up smoking altogether; failing that, only ever smoke outside. If you have to smoke indoors, remember to 'put it out - right out'."

Following the incident, the Service is visiting other homes in the area to distribute home fire safety information.
