People across Dorset are paying their respects to Stephen Lawrence today, exactly 28 years since his death.

Today is a national day of commemoration for the then 18 year old.

He was murdered by a gang of racists in South East London in 1993.

Only two of the estimated six men who attacked the teenager have been convicted.

Lynne Hubbard from Stand Up to Racism Dorset has been paying tribute.

She said:

"I think that we should be reflecting on a feeling of solidarity with Stephen's family and friends. I would really like to pay tribute to Doreen and Neville Lawrence who were absolutely tireless ensuring that justice was done, and that there was an independent inquiry into what happened.

"I think it's always important to remember the Stephen Lawrence's and the George Floyds and the many others whose lives have been lost.

"It's by remembering that they're human beings, they're somebody's son, they're somebody's dad, they're people just like me and you that actually means that people do protest, raise things in their trade unions and shows solidarity with each other that we do want a society where everybody is respected and where everybody feels safe and valued.

"I think that days like this and these memories are very important to keep that in the public consciousness and try to ensure that these things don't happen again."
