A Dorset Police officer has pleaded guilty to a charge of non-fatal strangulation of a man he put into a "chokehold" in an altercation outside a bar.

Police Constable Tyler McWalter, of Dorset Police, entered his plea at Weymouth Magistrates' Court in connection with the assault outside Kika Beach on The Esplanade in Weymouth, on September 14 2024.

The court heard that the 30-year-old, who was off-duty, caused the victim haemorrhaging to his left eye and a sore neck and throat.

The case was adjourned for reports to be prepared on the defendant, who is of previous good character, ahead of the sentencing hearing on July 3 and McWalter was released on bail until then.

A Dorset Police spokesman said: "He has been placed on restricted duties following this incident, which means he has not been working in a public-facing role."

He added: "The victim sustained an injury to his eye during the incident and also reported a sore throat and neck."
