Dorset Police is leading efforts to combat romance fraud this Valentine’s Day with a ‘Big Night In’ .

In recent years, as people value platonic relationships more and more, people are often choosing to celebrate 'Galentines' and 'Palentines' on Feburary the 14th, instead of celebrating romantic relationships.

Dorset police are taking this idea a step further, suggesting we combine fun platonic events with educating ourselves and our friends on so called 'Romance Fraud'.

The campaign includes giving out free e-packs with information on how to avoid the crime- offering practical tips for safe dating and information on reporting fraud and sextortion.

You can join in with the campaign and show your support on social media with the hashtag #DorsetsBigNightIn.

They say that Romance fraud is a devastating crime that affects people of all ages, often leaving victims with financial losses and significant emotional trauma.

The Force believes that empowering communities to identify and disrupt romance fraud at the point of contact is the key to making Dorset a safer place – and an example for the rest of the UK.

In response, it has launched a campaign entitled ‘Dorset’s Big Night In’ along with a free pack

The campaign calls on residents across the county to come together on Friday 14 February in homes, clubs, and community venues to learn about online dating safety, support each other, and take a stand against romance fraud.

Fraud Protect Officer Damian Cranny, of Dorset Police, said: "The people of Dorset have a unique opportunity to show how we can stop romance fraudsters in their tracks. By raising awareness and supporting each other, we can create a safer online environment for everyone."

“There are plenty of ways to get involved with the campaign on 14 February: You can get a group together, get the party snacks in and download the information pack onto your phone, iPad or laptop. Read through the information, discuss your experiences with your friends and support each other - one of the people in your group may realise that they have been a victim of romance fraud."

“Remember you don’t need to be dating online to support your friends.”
