ELECTION 2021: Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner result today
We'll bring you the latest from the count
The counting of ballot papers will get underway from 10am this morning for yesterday's Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner elections.
Dorset is guaranteed a new PCC as Martyn Underhill didn't stand in the election.
There are five candidates here in Dorset and we're expecting to hear the result by early afternoon.
Here's a list of the candidates:
- Claire Seymour: Green Party
- Dan Hardy: Independent
- David Sidwick: The Conservative Party
- Mark Andrew Robson: Liberal Democrats
- Patrick Canavan: Labour and Co-operative Party
What does the PCC do?
It's a relatively new post and we've only gone to the polls for them three times, which is why many aren't familiar with what they actually do.
The role is designed to hold our police forces to account on behalf of our communities.
According to the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners it means:
"The role of the PCCs is to be the voice of the people and hold the police to account. They are responsible for the totality of policing.
"PCCs aim to cut crime and deliver an effective and efficient police service within their force area.
"PCCs have been elected by the public to hold Chief Constables and the force to account, effectively making the police answerable to the communities they serve.
"PCCs ensure community needs are met as effectively as possible, and are improving local relationships through building confidence and restoring trust. They work in partnership across a range of agencies at local and national level to ensure there is a unified approach to preventing and reducing crime."
