Dorset Museum is opening its doors up for free today as part of Heritage Open Days.

Heritage Open Days are England's largest festival of history and culture.

To celebrate, entry to Dorset Museum is going to be completely free for one day only - today.

It's going to give visitor the chance to get a behind the scenes look at the museum which reopened this year.

All behind the scenes tours have been booked now, but the lucky people who booked in will see the new state of the art Collections Discovery Centre, where they will be able to find out more about the work going on to move the museum's collection back home.

Participants on the tour will also have the opportunity to explore some objects up close in the Conservation Studio.

Director Jon Murden said:

"It's a way of making sure everyone has access to history and the past in their local community, and making sure that finances are not a bar to coming and enjoying and engaging with their heritage.

"People are really fascinated by things that they don't normally get to see. You see it in Dorchester when places like the prison open and you get that behind the scenes. It's that rare privileged chance to go and experience something."
