Dorset learner drivers face 4 month wait to retake tests
They've had just 10 days to get ready as test centres reopen
Dorset's driving pupils are facing a lot of pressure as test centres open again today. (22 April)
Anyone who fails their test could face a 17 week waiting period as the DVSA deals with a national backlog of 420,000 tests.
Lessons were given the green light to start again 10 days ago, meaning learners have not had long to prepare.
Mark Mills is a driving instructor in Weymouth.
He told Greatest Hits Radio Dorset:
"If you don't pass, then you've got to go to the back of the queue again, meaning you're looking September/ October again.
"They haven't been able to drive for the past three months, and they worry and they start feeling they'll have forgotten everything.
"They don't, it's like riding a bike, you never forget, you might be a little bit rusty but it doesn't take much to get you back up to that standard."
The DVSA is planning a campaign to encourage learners to only take their test when they are confident they can pass to help alleviate some of the backlog.
Mark says he never puts someone up for a test unless he's sure they can do it, but you never know how someone might perform.
He added:
"From my personal point of view, my students - they're ready for their tests.
"Nerves always kick in and sometimes it's like Jekyll and Hyde, you don't know how the nerves are going to affect that one person."
