Dorset knob throwing school league could start next term
Plus, school holds Welly Wangling competition this weekend.
Dorset Knob Throwing could become a county-wide school sport if one headteacher has his way.
Prince of Wales First School in Dorchester ran a knob throwing event last week after the Dorset Knob Throwing Festival was cancelled again this year.
For the uninitiated, a Dorset Knob is a type of biscuit produced in Dorset by Moore's Biscuits. It's got a hard rough exterior that is much easier to swallow when dipped in something, like tea.
Now Gary Spracklen, headteacher, is challenging other schools to form a league and toss their way to the top, head to head.
He told Greatest Hits Radio:
"I'm really keen to get other Dorset schools involved in a Dorset Knob Throwing league. I think we should celebrate our local cultural heritage here in Dorset and what better way of doing that than school's competing."
When asked if other schools are on board, Gary said:
"I think at the moment they're a little scared of the Prince of Wales School. We've been practicing so much that they are training in secret at the moment and I'm expecting a whole raft of competitive matches to come on in the next term.
"I think it's fair to say Prince of Wales School have got a head start and it's always hard to be the next team to come up to the plate but I have heard rumours in Dorset headteachers meetings that other schools are in training."
He says one school has even set up a special gym to build the specific skillset required to toss a knob the longest distance.
Gary added:
"Obviously that's come as a shock to us and we're going to have to think how we can upgrade our facilities to take on the local competition."
This weekend a special event including Dorset Knob Throwing and Welly Wangling is being held at the Great Field in Poundbury on Sunday to raise money for the Dorset Lions Club.
