£4.5 million of Government funding is coming to Dorset, to extend the Household Support Scheme.

Dorset Council will get the cash, with the aim of helping eligible families that need it through until the end of March 2024.

The scheme gives local authority their own scope on how they spend the cash.

Up until now, Dorset Council has used their funding to provide school meal vouchers for the February half term and Easter school breaks.

It could also be used to support people struggling with rising energy bills.

The funding announcement has been welcomed by West Dorset MP Chris Loder.

He's been campaigning in the House of Commons for more support for Dorset Council, and said:

“I am pleased to see the Government fully investing in the wellbeing of rural communities who remain in need of assistance in difficult economic circumstances.

"This will provide much needed security for the Council and all those who depend on this support."
