A farm in Sherborne has hosted a group of inner city students, as part of a scheme led by fast-food giant McDonalds.

The project aims to get young people excited about a career in the farming industry.

The visit was put together with help from Kingston Maurward College, near Dorchester.

The students were taught all things farming, including the process of milking a cow to animal welfare.

They were also given careers and employability advice from industry experts.

Dorset's McDonalds Franchisee Chris Truscott led the three-day pilot:

“They had a great time. (The students) The most touching thing for me was really seeing the change in them from day one to day three. They just really came alive.”

During the visit, students also heard from the McDonald’s Supply Chain team about the 'farm to front counter experience' including a behind the scenes tour of the Dorchester McDonald’s restaurant.

Chris Truscott said:

“I think it’s fantastic that we’ve had the opportunity to pilot this in Dorset and it really recognises some of the key attributes that the region has, and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring some students from an inner-city environment to what is such an amazing part of the world. I think that it’s really good for the local community to be at the leading edge of this pilot programme."
