Plea for safe use of fireworks and bonfires from Dorset's fire service
They warn that accidents can have life-changing consequences
Dorset's Fire and Rescue Service has issued advice on how to stay safe during Bonfire night celebrations.
People across the country will be hosting or attending bonfire and fireworks displays this weekend ahead of 5th November.
Bonfire night is long remembered for the tale of Guy Fawkes and has since evolved into spectacular displays of fireworks and bonfires.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service's (DWFRS), Vikki Thomas said: “Fireworks have the potential to be a great social event enjoyed with friends and family.
"However, accidents involving fireworks and bonfires can be life changing and have a devastating impact on anyone involved.
"Therefore, we would really like people to take the time to act appropriately and safely.”
DWFRS has shared a list of tips to reduce the risk of fire when hosting a bonfire or fireworks display.
• Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable and check the time you can legally set off fireworks.
• Only buy fireworks which carry the CE or UKCA marks, keep them in a closed box, and use them one at a time.
• Read and follow the instructions on each firework, using a torch if necessary.
• Light the firework at arm’s length with a taper and stand well back.
• Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks.
• Never return to a firework once it has been lit.
• Don’t put fireworks in pockets and never throw them.
• Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators.
• Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire.
• Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving.
The fire service is urging people to check guidance on setting up fireworks, even if they've used them before, as guidance can change regularly.
