It's World Ocean Day, and Litter Free Dorset say people need to either put rubbish inside a bin or take it home.

It comes as the highly anticipated staycation period gets underway and more people visit Dorset's beauty spots.

Litter Free Dorset are asking people to take responsibility for their own litter, even if all the bins are full.

'Tidy littering' is when people place filled bin bags next to an overflowing rubbish bin to be collected along with everything inside it.

But, seagulls can still find their way into those bags and remove rubbish in search of food.

Sophie Colley from Litter Free Dorset said:

"We want people to come to Dorset. We've got some really gorgeous bathing water here and we want to keep it that way.

"Everyone's got a part to play in this, and it's not always just about taking your rubbish home from the beach, but there's lots of things you can do to reduce there being takeaway packaging and single use plastic so the bins are less full."

She added:

"The thing with the ocean is it's all interconnected so really when it comes to looking after our seas we need to think about the bigger picture sometimes.

"Something that might be dropped on a beach in Dorset might end up on the other side of the world, and vice versa."
