Dorchester Town FC player suffers serious neck injury during match
Their match with Basingstoke will be replayed
Dorchester Town FC's FA Trophy match with Basingstoke had to be abandoned after a footballer suffered a serious injury to his neck.
Wes Fogden was rushed to hospital during their away match at Basingstoke on Saturday.
Town later confirmed that he fractured vertebrae in his neck, which will require a number of weeks in a neck collar.
In statement, Dorchester said: "Our FA Trophy game at Basingstoke Town yesterday was abandoned following a serious injury to Magpies player/coach Wes Fogden in the first half.
"Wes was conscious and talking as he was taken in to the ambulance, and scans in hospital yesterday evening have confirmed two fractured vertebrae in his neck, which will require a number of weeks in a neck collar. We will provide further updates on Wes' condition when we are able to.
"We would like to place on record our thanks to all Magpies and Basingstoke staff and players who helped look after Wes yesterday on the pitch before he was taken to hospital.
"From everyone at the club, we send our love and very best wishes to Wes for a full and speedy recovery."
The match with be replayed on Tuesday (28th October) with supporters able to re-use their tickets.
Basingstoke Town praised the reaction from their medical staff and have wished Fogden a speedy recovery. Posting on their socials the club said: "Following yesterday’s abandoned FA Trophy fixture, we’re pleased to hear that Wes is in excellent hands after suffering two fractured vertebrae in his neck.
"While it’s a serious injury, Wes is conscious, talking, and receiving great care, and we know the football family will be sending him all the strength and positivity possible for a full recovery.
"We also want to place on record our pride in how everyone at the ground responded, from staff and players of both clubs to the supporters who showed incredible empathy and respect throughout.
"And finally, a huge credit to our Head of Medical, Seanagh McCarthy, for her exceptional professionalism and care in a difficult situation. Seanagh is brilliant every week, but in moments like this, you truly appreciate how outstanding she is.
