Staff at a Weymouth café struck by a lorry yesterday say the person behind the wheel shouldn't get abuse online.

It's after a crash that removed a chunk of wall above Edge Café on St Thomas Street yesterday.

The lorry driver hit the wall trying to maneuver around the tight corner, something which isn't possible for vehicles of that size.

Paige Jolliff works at the café and watched it happen. She says there was lots of undeserved abuse hurled at the driver on social media. She said:

"There should be a sign saying not suitable for lorries.

"Obviously people on facebook were blaming the lorry driver and I was like 'please do not blame him, he already feels bad enough.'

"He was really sheepish yesterday, he was really shook up and everyone was just like 'he's such an amateur."

She says it was just a mistake:

"You need a proper license to drive a lorry, it's not just your regular license you get from a car."

Instead, Paige thinks the solution is signage.

"These drivers are used to being in the city, they're used to being on motorways. They're used to having basically the whole road to themselves.

"Then they come into Weymouth and it's not very well signposted. I've done driving lessons and I've struggled to get round those corners."
