A Dorchester woman who's cat was subjected to a brutal attack is thanking the local community for their support.

Dawn Stacey was left with a ÂŁ2,000 vets bill after Murphy needed emergency surgery.

When he came back to his home in Windsor Road on Tuesday night he could hardly get through the cat flap.

Dawn saw that he had sustained an horrific head injury.

"It looked like an alien was looking at me. He looked like he had a helmet on, filled with blood. His eye was bulging out of his head," she said.

Dawn rushed Murphy to Southfield Vets. When she got there they took him in straight away and put him on an IV drip.

The vet told her that she believes he sustain a deliberate blow to the head.

Dawn told Greatest His Radio Dorset:

"How can somebody be so cruel as to kick a defenceless animal that can't stick up for itself? I was thinking I have lost my cat. And the worst scenario she said was he was going to have to have his eye removed."

Luckily Murphy responded well to his surgery and is now on the mend.

Murphy before the attack

Dawn said she was worried the incident would change his personality, but that's not been the case.

"He's purring, he's fussing, he's loving, he's sleeping on our laps. He hasn't lost his personality whatsoever. He's still Murphy, minus an eye."

Dawn launched a Go Fund Me Page to help raise funds to pay for the surgery.

"We now only have ÂŁ400 pounds left on his bill. Two people have even walked into the vets to make donations."

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said:

"Dorset Police received a report at around 11.30am on Wednesday 23 February 2022 that a cat had returned home with injuries to Windsor Road in Dorchester. The cat was taken to the vets and it was reported that injuries had been caused by a human.

"Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team have been made aware. They will be carrying out patrols in the area and can be approached by anyone with information or concerns."
