Campaign to rid Dorset of disposable BBQs proving successful

Litter Free Dorset's calling on businesses to help

A Dorset campaign group is thanking businesses in the county for their support of a push to remove disposable BBQs from sale.

Litter Free Dorset has been working on the project ahead of the busy summer tourism season, and say it's proving successful.

They're also calling on local people to back the campaign by moving away from disposable BBQs and choose picnics or reusable grills at safe, designated locations instead.

There's a few reasons why Litter Free Dorset is calling for the ban:

  • They say they're often inappropriately disposed of, sometimes resulting in wildfire, with devastating environmental, social and economic impact
  • They're unsustainable – single use and non-recyclable, so destined for landfill or incineration, while containing charcoal, often from unsustainable sources, contributing to deforestation
  • They pose a considerable safety risk to beach users, often being left under sand or littered, leading to injury

Aldi and Waitrose have already taken disposable BBQs off sale nationally, and Litter Free Dorset has also secured support from some local Tesco, Morrisons and Asda stores.

Richardson’s Budgens in Swanage and Studland Stores have also chosen to remove the equipment from sale as part of the campaign.

Sophie Colley, Coordinator of Litter Free Dorset said:

“A huge thank you to all the businesses across Dorset who have chosen to remove disposable BBQs from sale. Your actions will really help reduce the likelihood of another large-scale wildfire, while encouraging Dorset residents and visitors alike to opt for more sustainable options.”
