A derelict building in Bridport has been targeted by arsonists.

Six fire engines were called to Flood Lane yesterday afternoon (10 July).

On arrival crews found smoke coming from the roof.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service say the blaze was started by cushions from a sofa being deliberately set alight.

A spokesperson for Bridport Fire Station said:

"Thankfully the quick actions of the crews prevented a significant fire.

"It is obvious people have been unlawfully entering the building causing damage to the inside with smashed glass, damage to walls, rubbish, fallen cables and open trap doors in the floor. This can be extremely dangerous for fire fighters entering the property with zero visibility. What seems like harmless fun could have major implications.

"This fire also caused a strain on the emergency services due to the amount of appliances and officers in attendance plus all the standby moves instigated to cover stations in attendance.

"The local authority were requested to attend to secure the building."

A spokesperson from Dorset Police said:

"We received a report at 5.10pm on Sunday 10 July 2022 of fire at a derelict building in Flood Lane in Bridport.

"The fire service was in attendance. There were no reports of anyone inside the property and no reports of any injuries.

"Following liaison with the fire service, the cause of the fire is believed to have been deliberate.

"Officers have been carrying out enquiries and no arrests have been made."
