A businesswoman in Dorchester is bringing a whole new meaning to working from home.

She's turning her garage into a deli.

A change from a garage to a delicatessen has been agreed at 7 South Walks Road, Dorchester.

The one-woman business is expected to keep normal shop hours, not opening on Sundays.

Town councillors had expressed concerns about the change of use and the effect the business could have on neighbours and the town’s Conservation area.

A neighbour, who lives above the integral garage, had written to say that while not against the change she would like to be assured that there would be sufficient insulation to reduce noise and the loss of heat and is also concerned about any additional cars which the business might attract to the area – which already suffers a shortage of spaces.

A planning officer report concluded that the small deli’- only 26square metres, would have little impact with no change to the garage space – the owner simply opening the garage door when the business was active.

The business would not have any signs and would rely on word of mouth to attract customers offering fresh fruit and vegetables, milk, cheese, butter, eggs and bread, pre-packed tea, coffee, biscuits, hampers, herbs and spices, recipe packs, snacks, jams, pickles and marmalades as well as refill soaps, shampoos and detergents.
