Ride the Change: West Dorset Friends of the Earth cycle for COP26
Dorset cyclists are reminding locals that the UK and the international community are engaged in a high stakes conference to save our planet
Up to 50 cyclists representing West Dorset Friends of The Earth will be taking part in an organised cycle ride around parts of the town centre today as part of the COP26 campaign.
Where are they cycling?
The route will start at the Bridport football ground car park at 11am where the riders will walk their bikes over the footbridge leading to St Mary’s Church.
They will then assemble in South Street at 11:45 and hope to finish their ride by 12:30 when they will assemble at the Community Orchard.
The ride is for experienced road cyclists
Speed of the group is unlikely to exceed 10 mph. All riders should wear helmets, reflective clothing (they will have some high vis vests) and carry a bike lock (for afterwards in the Orchard). All riders will be covered for public liability through Friends of the Earth, but will gain injury and property damage if they join the Local group (at no cost). They are asking riders to wear a mask (bring your own, they will provide some) , used to demonstrate polluted air not covid (exceptions allowed).
West Dorset Friends of the Earth say:
“We hope that 40-50 cyclists will be taking a direct route through the town, before crossing Asker’s meadow. The cyclists will remind Saturday shoppers that the UK and the international community are engaged in a high stakes conference to save our planet.
“We want to be seen, but not to cause obstruction. Materials for signs and pre-printed signs will be available at the meeting point at the Football Car Park. We will meet at 11, head out by 11:45, and finish around 12:30 in the Orchard, with refreshments and chat.”
A Spokesperson from Bridport Police said:
“The cyclists will be riding the width of a vehicle so we would advise motorists to avoid the area between these times to avoid any delay to your journey and ask that drivers remain patient, allowing plenty of space between the cyclists and your vehicle so not to put people in danger.
