Converted e-bike behind fire in Bournemouth block of flats
Residents at the YMCA in Westover Road has to be evacuated
Dozens of people were evacuated from a block of flats in Bournemouth town centre in the early hours of this morning (Monday 18th December) after a large fire broke out.
Over 50 firefighters from 10 engines were needed to put out the flames at the YMCA building in Westover Road at around 1.30am.
Firefighters were alerted after smoke detectors within the building activated, allowing all residents the time to evacuate.
One person was treated for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire has now been found to have been a converted electric bike inside one of the flats.
Now there's a warning to e-bike owners about the potential fire risks associated with with lithium-ion batteries.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Station Manager Shaun Milton said:
“We know that e-bikes and e-scooters are increasingly popular, but it’s vital that owners understand what to look for when buying them, and how to charge them safely.
“Anyone buying an e-bike conversion kit should always purchase from a reputable seller, and check that it complies with British or European safety standards. You should also check that the various components are compatible.”
