Coastguards issue warning after young people seen tombstoning at West Bay
They've been jumping from the pier into the harbour
A warning's going out to parents after young people have been seen Tombstoning in West Bay.
Coastguard patrols have spotted them jumping off the piers into the harbour.
Young people have also been seen climbing onto the Salt House roof and using a wall as a diving platform into the river.
Coastguards say this is highly dangerous as the depth of the water can dramatically change an there could be hidden hazards under the surface.
Coastguards issued safety advice on both occasions and signage is present in both locations warning of the dangers and prohibiting this activity.
A spokesperson said:
"Tombstoning from piers, cliffs, rocks or other structures into the water can be very dangerous.
"The depth of the water can dramatically change with the tide, and what was a deep pool at lunchtime might be a shallow puddle by teatime.
"You don’t know what hazards may be lurking under the surface until you are hurt or worse.
"The shock of cold water may also make it difficult to swim to safety and strong currents can quickly sweep you away."
Remember to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if you see anyone in difficulty.
