A climber had to be airlifted to safety after falling 8 metres off a cliff on Portland yesterday afternoon (August 19).

The coastguard say the male climber got into difficulty at around 14:30 yesterday afternoon when he suffered an ankle injury.

He was then moved a short distance on a stretcher before being winched up by the rescue helicopter.

He was then checked over by the land ambulance crew, before being taken to hospital for treatment.

In a statement on their social media, the Portland Bill Coastguard Team said: "The team were tasked by Solent Coastguard along with Wyke Coastguard CRT to the incident.

The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust Paramedics and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance were called out to assist.

"A Male Climber had fallen approximately 8 metres and suffered an ankle injury at Blacknor, Westcliff, Portland, and when crews arrived at the scene, the Climber was assessed and treated for his injury by the Air Ambulance crew.

"Due to the difficult location, the climber was stretcher carried a short distance under the cliff to then be winched by the Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 187 to the top of the cliff to be transferred to land ambulance to be taken to DCH for futher treatment."
