Christchurch to host 'grand celebration' for VE Day 80th anniversary
The Town Council already planning an event on the Quay this May
A 'grand celebration' is being planned for Christchurch to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day - the end of World War Two in Europe.
The Town Council's putting together an event at the Quay on the evening of Thursday 8th May.
The aim of the gathering between 6.00 and 10.00pm that night is to 'evoke the joyful spirit of the street parties that marked the original VE Day in 1945'.
Christchurch has strong historical ties to the war effort, with the Town Council saying they want to 'bring the community together in remembrance, celebration, and reflection'.
What's planned?
Live music from vintage and military bands, war-time vehicles, family-friendly activities, historical displays and exhibitions, and planned throughout the event.
Visitors are encouraged to go along in war-time costumes and Union Jacks with a best dressed competition being held on the night.
Food, drink and gift stalls, face painting and fun fair rides will also be set up.
As part of the national commemorations, Christchurch will join other town in observing key moments, like a Town Crier’s Proclamation, a Scots Piper, the lighting of the Beacon at 9.30pm, and the singing of "I Vow to Thee My Country."
Acting Town Clerk, James Atkinson, said:
"VE Day is a momentous occasion in our nation’s history, and Christchurch is proud to play a leading role in marking its 80th anniversary. We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors to the Quay for what promises to be a truly spectacular evening."
Mandy Polkey, Managing Director of Stir Events CIC:

“It’s a privilege to be entrusted with such a significant event that honours our history and community spirit. We look forward to collaborating with Christchurch Town Council once again to create a memorable and meaningful celebration for all."
