A group of roller skaters from Weymouth are holding a charity roller disco tonight with all the proceeds going to a charity that mentor and support young girls.

The South West Skaters event will be at the Redlands Community Sports Hub.

It starts at 5pm and begins with a one-hour coaching session to run through the basics of roller skating.

After, there will be a DJ with funky disco music, a bar and a raffle with goodies from local businesses.

The event is being sponsored by local business Store6 and the South West Skaters haven chosen to support the charity ‘The Girls Network’.

Who’s mission it is to inspire and empower girls from the least advantaged communities by connecting them with a mentor and a network of professional female role models.

Who are the South West Skaters?

A group of women have set up their own roller-skating club that promotes exercise and healthy activities.

Even though they are fairly new, they are rapidly growing in numbers.

Their motto is we are an inclusive and supportive roller-skating crew who love giving back to the community.

Recently, ASDA have the group exclusive use of their multi-storey car park, which organiser Kat Rodda says is a big win for them.

“We now have a flat, safe space to practice and undercover to skate when it rains.

“This event is open to everyone not just members in the group so feel free to spread the word! We are mostly beginners so no need to feel intimidated, everyone helps and supports each other so come along and meet a wonderful community.”

If you join the Sunday group, there are rules to follow:

  • All litter etc is put in bins when we leave.
  • Music is allowed music but cannot have it too loud because of the neighbours.
  • There is a 3hr time limit for parking, also not allowed to return within 3hrs if anyone is dropping somebody off, so would probably be best to drop off by the bus stop.
  • Unfortunately it is only for use of roller skates/ blades
  • ASDA and SWS cannot be held accountable for any injuries occurred on the premises.
