Firefighters have rescued a cat during a large kitchen fire in Dorset.

Crews were called to West Walls in Wareham, not far from the fire station, just before 8.30pm 8 last night.

They helped those inside salvage some belongings.

A spokesperson for Wareham Fire Station said:

"Two of our fire engines were sent to a kitchen fire in Wareham along with a fire engine from Poole.

"The resident was alerted by a smoke alarm thankfully.

"Firefighters soon extinguished the large fire and rescued the householders cat too."
