Missing cat found caught in an illegal animal trap in Dorset
RSPCA warns someone could be setting traps.
The RSPCA's concerned that someone is setting illegal traps in Dorset.
It's after a cat was found with its leg clamped in a Gin trap in Askerswell.
The cat - a black and white male named Jordan who had been missing from his home for a month.
He was discovered with his front right leg clamped in the trap by members of the public in Askerswell in Dorchester on Monday. (16 November)
The animal welfare charity fears someone in the area is intentionally setting the deadly traps - whose use have been outlawed for more than 60 years.
RSPCA inspector Charlotte Coggins, who is investigating, said:
"Thankfully, Jordan was rushed to a vet where he was given a helping hand to free him from the jaws of the deadly trap but it could have been so much worse. These devices are illegal to set, and can cause significant pain and suffering to defenceless animals.
"We're sure somebody in the local area will know something about this trap and ask people living in the area to be vigilant for similar traps, and to report any information about this incident by calling our inspectorate appeal line in complete confidence on 0300 123 8018."
Gin Traps
Gin traps are mechanical traps designed to catch an animal by their leg, using spring-operated jaws with teeth or a serrated edge. The use of gin traps has been outlawed in the UK since 1958, but some are still being illegally used to catch animals such as rabbits and foxes. Anyone found guilty of setting a gin trap faces an unlimited fine and/or six months in prison.
