Campaign launched to save Brewers Quay from rotting away
The dilapidated site in Weymouth is now up for sale
Campaigners are calling for an end to the rotting away of Brewers Quay in Weymouth.
Previously the building was used as a shopping arcade and was home to the much loved 'Timewalk'.
Now, it's looking a little worse for wear inside and developers Versant have been placed into receivership, so the building is back on the market.
A social media group "Save Brewers Quay" has been started to save the historic building now that's its going back on the market.
The group says it's aiming to bring the landmark into community ownership to ensure it will never be forgotten.
Paul Sherry is the organiser of the group. He told Greatest Hits Radio Dorset:
"When you go in there it's full of pigeons. There are heritage pieces in there like the old pumps which are now just covered in pigeon droppings. They should all be looked after, it should all be maintained.
"Certain areas aren't actually to bad, it's where windows are broken and the roof is leaking in places. There's mold and moss growing in certain places.
"It's just rotting away. The longer it goes on, the worse it's going to get."
Paul is setting up a community company to attempt to take ownership of the building and restore it to it's former glory.
He added:
"I think the local community have seen enough of the site becoming dilapidated and run down and we basically need to take it on ourselves and get it running back into a museum and a commercial asset and an asset that Weymouth can be proud of.
"We can have a brand new Timewalk-ish museum, with an interactive modern version of it, we need a bar and restaurant back and reinstated, and with all the little shopping areas.
"It would make a fantastic indoor venue for bad weather, which people are crying out for in Weymouth and yet we've got that massive building sat there rotting away."
