Firefighters in Bridport are urging people to be careful when cooking, after being called out to two blazes in as many days.

In the first incident, a fire was caused by something left on the hob of a flat in Hibernia Place, at around 10.00am on Saturday (25th November).

The pan involved was removed from the property and put out by another resident in the block of flats.

Crews from Beaminster and Lyme Regis were called out along with the Bridport firefighters, with ventilation carried out in the flat.

The following day (Sunday 26th November), at around 11.40am, crews were then called out to a blaze in an oven.

Some cooking had been left in too long, along with a cardboard serving tray.

Crews put out the fire by removing the tray and isolation of the oven.

The incidents have prompted some safety tips from firefighters:

  • Never leave cooking unattended
  • Keep the cooking area clear of items that can catch alight
  • Ensure you only put items that are oven safe into an oven
  • Set timers to remind you when your cooking is finished
  • Ensure cookers and hobs are off after use and remember that they will stay hot for sometime after being switched off
  • Make sure you have smoke alarms installed and check they work regularly
