Firefighters from across the county have been involved in a tackling a fire in West Dorset.

Crews were called to Bothenhampton last night to deal with what was thought to be a suspected barn fire.

When they arrived they found a large unattended bonfire, which due to the wind was blowing embers into a nearby barn containing hay bails and farm machinery.

A spokesperson for Bridport Fire Station said:

"Bridport's 4x4 appliance made its way to the fire and crews used 1 hose reel jet and small tools to extinguish the fire. As the farm track was unsuitable for large appliances, 2 Land Rovers were requested. These attended from Bridport Fire Station and Maiden Newton Fire Station.

"Once the water had been depleted on Bridport's 4x4 appliance the incident was handed over to Maiden Newton and Beaminster to continue damping down.

"This incident resulted in a large mobilisation of multiple appliances and crew from across West Dorset.

"If you're planning on having a bonfire please inform our control by calling 0306 799 0019 and always stay with the fire in case it should go out of control."
