Bomb squad carry out controlled explosion on Weymouth Beach
Part of Weymouth Esplanade was cordoned off
A controlled explosion has been carried out on Weymouth Beach after a suspicious object washed up.
Wyke Coastguard were called out yesterday afternoon. (21st February)
The bomb disposal team were called in to deal with what turned out to be a 30-year-old box of flares.
The area was cordoned off, including part of the esplanade, to protect the public while a controlled explosions was carried out.
A spokesman for Wyke Coastguard Rescue Team said:
"Whilst this was in progress a member of the public running on the seafront became aggressive towards one of our Coast Rescue Officers. He wanted to continue along the closed section of promenade.
"Just to clarify, it is an offensive to obstruct an Emergency Services Worker going about his or her duty and we are protected by this Act in Law.
"A successful controlled explosion removed the potential danger and team members stood down at approximately 1840."
